Transform your consumption, transform your municipality

CSO: UCAUCE Sevilla
Area: Responsible consumption.
Location: Umbrete y Villamanrique de la Condesa (province of Seville)

Type of project

Promote the modification and change of consumption habits towards responsible and sustainable models through participatory and inclusive processes based on scientific evidence, strengthening environmental awareness and citizen commitment in the municipalities involved.

Growing public concern about lifestyle and the environment contrasts with an evident disconnect from nature and low environmental awareness. According to data from Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, although 93.5% of Spaniards recognise climate change as a real problem, more than 70% do not adopt behaviours consistent with this concern. This gap between knowledge and action highlights the urgent need for initiatives that promote the active involvement of citizens, especially in local contexts where the impact can be more direct and transformative. ‘Transform your consumption, transform your municipality’ is proposed as a community action to raise awareness and sensitise people to responsible consumption and sustainability.

The project implementation duration is 9 months.

Target (Disengaged)

An initial participatory assessment will be carried out to investigate and identify the level of environmental awareness, barriers to participation, and prevailing purchasing and consumption habits in the municipalities where the programme is being implemented, with a view to changing perceptions and habits, especially among the most disengaged citizens. Community awareness-raising activities will be combined with the necessary institutional involvement. The target audience is estimated at more than 9,000 people, with direct participation from at least 450 individuals and 30 local institutions, given the low level of environmental awareness (approximately 62.9% of the population is uninvolved).

Science – Based

The planned dissemination is based on scientific evidence, including up-to-date and verified data on climate change, responsible consumption and the circular economy, from reliable official sources such as the IPCC, MITECO, AEMET and universities, etc. Teaching materials containing this scientific evidence will be used in messages that are understandable to all audiences, explaining the impacts of consumption and sustainable alternatives in a clear and accessible way.

Gender

The aim is to empower women as agents of change in raising awareness and commitment to climate change and the circular economy. A balanced presence in the project will be facilitated. Experiences, testimonies, stories and female role models will be incorporated to inspire and mobilise other women in the local context.

Planned activities

  • The project aims to raise environmental awareness and reconnect people with nature, transform purchasing and consumption habits towards sustainable and responsible practices, empower society, especially women and young people, and strengthen trust in science.

Action model

  • The project is built from the ground up, with citizens playing a leading role. The activities are designed to be accessible, motivating and adapted to the cultural, generational and socio-economic diversity of the target audience. This ensures greater assimilation of the content, a real transformation of habits and attitudes, and reinforced social cohesion around common values, activating sectors that are traditionally less involved.
