Teatro Metáfora – “ Planeta A”

CSO: Teatro Metáfora – “ Planeta A”
Area: Sustainable Cities
Location: Portugal

Type of project

The project is implemented by a Theatre Organization that disseminates the message about environment through performing arts, which is an effective way to reach people in the streets, including disengaged.
Besides, it is implemented in Madeira Island, which has many particularities and less opportunities than the continent.

It intends to hold community events, such as lectures and discussions, Ecomarathons to collect trash and the creation of a mural. It is directed specially to you people.

Target (Disengaged)

The target group is made up of 150 young people aged 15 to 30; and 200 citizens of various age groups. The project is structured to create several layers of involvement, adapted to different citizen profiles, with a special focus on those who are usually less involved in environmental issues, namely young people and residents of more remote areas, who are often excluded from the debate on climate change.

The main strategy to reach the disengaged it the creation of community events (i.e. material reuse workshops, litter collection ecomarathons), combined with a large-scale mural.
Social networks, traditional channels and partnerships with local institutions will ensure that communication reaches different audiences, encouraging active participation.

Science – Based

The creative reuse of materials workshops will be based on scientific principles related to the circular economy, sustainable management of resources and environmental impact. During the workshops, participants will have the opportunity to learn how reuse practices, such as producing soap from used oil or making recycled paper, are directly related to reducing pollution and combating waste. Activities will include accessible explanations about the positive impact of these practices on the environment, based on scientific data, such as the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the conservation of natural resources. Furthermore, the messages transmitted during the project will be based on concrete and easily verifiable data, reinforcing the importance of trusting science to adopt more sustainable behaviors.

The large-scale mural will be developed to integrate symbolic representations based on environmental data, such as the effects of pollution, desertification and biodiversity preservation.

Gender

Activities were designed to promote the inclusion of women, especially in leadership roles, ensuring that the organizing team has balanced representation. Additionally, during workshops, online campaigns and community activities, the issue of climate justice is addressed with a gender lens, considering how women, especially in vulnerable communities, are often disproportionately affected by environmental crises. Ecomarathons and other events will be inclusive and organized to ensure that anyone, regardless of gender or physical condition, can participate on an equal footing, providing an environment safe and motivating for everyone.

Action model

The project has 3 results:

  • In R1 the community members, especially young people, are expected to become more aware of the importance of environmental preservation and motivated to participate in environmental citizenship actions, through lectures and discussions, and the creation of a large scale mural with visual impact.
  • In R2, the local community, specially the disengaged, will increase their participation in environmental activities, contributing to the preservation of natural spaces.
  • In R3, the aim is to achieve greater gender equity and the inclusion of diverse groups (particularly those furthest removed from the environmental debate) in the discussion around local sustainability, promoting trust in science and good practices. To this end, the activities are collaborative awareness campaigns where they discuss topics such as gender equality, science and sustainability. Includes digital content.
