Type of project

Improving green spaces to combat climate change through training and raising public awareness, promoting green jobs and involving local authorities in improving green spaces, thereby fostering a more environmentally friendly city.

This project arises from the need to adapt our city to climate projections that suggest a scenario with higher average temperatures. There are two priority groups: unemployed people, whose difficult situation leads many of them to put climate change and everything related to the environment on the back burner, or to feed on fake news; and local council staff, given the need for urban planning that increases the quantity and quality of trees and designs and expands green areas. It is expected to reach 20 unemployed people and at least 10 people from the City Council.

The project duration will be 7 months

Target (Disengaged)

 The priority groups are two that are currently disconnected. On the one hand, unemployed people, offering them training opportunities related to environmental care as a present and future employment option. On the other hand, City Council staff, with the aim of increasing their awareness and political commitment to this issue, translating into concrete actions in the municipality in the fight against climate change.

Science – Based

All teaching materials produced and distributed to students, as well as reports submitted to the administration, will be based on data made available to the public by the international scientific community, as well as the results of our small projects and actions.

Gender

This project will promote training and job placement for women in a sector, such as agriculture, that has traditionally been dominated by men. We will give priority to applications from women, reserving 60% of the places for them.

Planned activities

• Training and raising awareness among the population by promoting green jobs through a course on gardening and organic farming, an organic farming day in the municipal gardens, and the publication of content on social media. The involvement of the local administration in improving green areas will also be achieved through the drafting of an environmental report that identifies the shortcomings and necessary adaptations of the green areas in our municipality in the face of climate change and the participation of our organisation in the Local Environment Council of the Town Council.

Action model

• To select participants for the activities, a survey will be conducted via a digital platform aimed at the general population. The survey will identify the profiles with the greatest disengagement. This group of people will be offered the opportunity to participate in the training activities, and consideration will be given to factors such as unemployment status, youth, and gender. The survey will be disseminated via social media and email through our channels and the Women’s, Youth and Environment Delegations, as well as the SAE office.

  With regard to the local administration, we will submit a report to the Local Environment Council in which we will set out, point by point, a series of issues and objectives that our City Council must address, such as the creation of climate shelters, the increase and protection of tree cover, the recovery of soft soils, the efficient use of water, etc.
