Promotion of biodiversity and environmental dynamization in the ‘The Garden, Mural and Butterfly Refuge’

Type of project

This project aims to maintain a degraded urban space that is being naturalised to become a refuge for butterflies, other insects and plants, integrating educational, artistic and environmental awareness activities that strengthen social cohesion and ecological awareness.

The project responds to the need to regenerate green spaces in an urban neighbourhood (Torreblanca de los Caños) with significant environmental deficits, fostering biodiversity and creating a more sustainable and healthier environment for its inhabitants. The neighbourhood is classified as an area of social transformation due to its urban and environmental shortcomings.

The implementation will last 9 months.

Target (Disengaged)

Students, neighbourhood associations, families and the general population of Torreblanca, with emphasis on vulnerable groups, such as people with disabilities and young people at risk of social exclusion.

Science – Based

It incorporates studies on urban biodiversity and recovery of local ecosystems to design activities, ensuring that interventions in public space contribute to environmental regeneration and biodiversity enhancement. Collaboration with the Polytechnic School of Engineering (University of Seville) on the pond design and maintenance.

Gender

Awareness-raising campaigns and collaboration with schools school children on anniversaries such as Women’s Day, against gender-based violence, etc.

Planned activities

• Increasing local biodiversity, raising public awareness and strengthening community networks by environmental regeneration and the adoption of sustainable practices.

Action model

• It includes cleaning and reforestation of the area, decoration of the area with artistic murals, creation of naturalised ponds, educational workshops and awareness-raising campaigns on climate change and biodiversity.
