Establishment of a “River Community” that monitors the status of waterways to propose sustainable management policies.

Communities of riverside hamlets, fishing associations, and high school students.

Science-based

Participatory hydrological and biological monitoring (flow rate, chemical quality, macroinvertebrates) based on academic protocols.

Gender

40% female target; engineering students as role models and support for caregiving tasks to facilitate maternal participation.

Planned activities

• Training of “river sentinels,” Creation of 4 informal groups to take care part of the river and for field monitoring for 4 months, and workshops for drafting a River Contract. (and monitoring), feedback workshops, and 2 events

Action model

• Civic ecology and place-based education model; the hypothesis is that co-producing scientific knowledge generates empowerment and leads to more informed and shared political decisions.
