Type of project

The project “GreenCorner – Würzburg wächst mit uns” combines hands-on craft activities, climate knowledge, and the promotion of civic engagement. Young people and young adults build and design modular seating and greening elements using a modular system. The result is intended to be sustainable, mobile urban furniture that functions both as greening elements and as meeting places. The project translates the abstract concept of “climate adaptation” into directly visible, practical action.

The project emphasizes networking with local actor groups in the city and a strong hands-on approach.

Target

Through a focused selection of partner institutions and locations, the project aims to reach less engaged young people, for example those in vocational training for skilled trades. Based on the experience of youth culture centres, specific groups such as FLINTA* persons and other marginalized communities can be addressed. By combining practical work with creative and community-oriented elements, the project creates a low-threshold entry point for young people who have had little prior contact with climate topics.

Science – Based

The project links scientific insights directly with practical design work. In addition to existing expertise in design, architecture, and various scientific fields, external experts (for example from the University of Würzburg, e.g., biology and geography) are expected to bring current research on biodiversity, microclimate, and climate adaptation into the workshops.

Gender

The project promotes gender justice by intentionally creating access for young women and non-binary people to craft and technical activities, for example through dedicated workshops. Primarily female role models from science and crafts are included, and gender roles are reflected upon.

Planned activities

• Approximately 150 young people are engaged through several workshop formats while building green urban furniture, raising awareness of climate change and motivating responsible action. 
• The new urban furniture is installed at 10 locations and includes information panels. 
• A group of engaged young people within each participating institution is formed through multiplier work, with the intention to maintain and potentially expand the concept. 
• Science-based accompanying workshop materials are produced to illustrate the link between global climate change and regional impacts.

Action model

“GreenCorner – Würzburg wächst mit uns” is framed as a prototype for participatory, science-based climate adaptation in urban spaces. Through open construction plans, modular concepts, and multiplier work, the approach is intended to be reusable in other cities. Bündnis ZukunftsKlima e.V. aims to feed project results into supra-regional networks for education and sustainability.
