Type of project

The workshop offers young people an opportunity to explore issues of global justice and sustainability while sparking their own curiosity and engagement. It focuses on global interconnections and the question of climate justice in relation to our consumption, particularly our diet. Participants will take part in a range of workshops, excursions, quizzes, and discussions with scientists. The project will conclude with the creation of a participatory educational concept, developed by young people, for young people.

The project motivates youth from diverse backgrounds to work together, combining scientific knowledge with their own perspectives and creativity to design an educational format that speaks to their generation.

Target

Young people from socially disadvantaged districts in Freiburg im Breisgau.

Science – Based

The project planners will prepare for the methods and workshops through research-based information of the Weltacker Freiburg. Guided by scientists and educators, young participants explore key scientific concepts such as soil fertility, resource use, biodiversity, and climate impact through interactive methods including experiments, observation, and data-based reflection. Quizzes, games, and field activities serve to translate complex findings into accessible, relatable experiences. 

Gender

Gender equality is addressed both structurally and thematically by ensuring balanced participation of women and men within the organisation and by explicitly addressing gender inequalities in global food and agricultural systems, such as unequal land ownership, gendered divisions of labour and persistent stereotypes, using interactive and illustrative methods. In addition, the project integrates research and educational inputs by female experts and practitioners from the fields of gender studies and global learning, ensuring that gender perspectives are embedded throughout workshop content, methodology and facilitation.

Planned activities

• Workshop 1 – Introduction & Exploration: Kick-off on the Weltacker Freiburg with interactive activities and guided field observations introducing global agriculture, climate, and consumption. Main target group: 30 young people from youth centers in Freiburg.
• Workshop 2 – Deep Dive & Co-Creation: Collaborative sessions with scientists and educators to explore topics like soil fertility, biodiversity, and resource justice through experiments and discussions.
• Workshop 3 – Reflection & Design: Youth groups synthesize insights and co-create their own educational concept or activity for peers. Main target group: the educational concept will be incorporated into our range of educational offerings for schools and interested groups as another Weltacker educational program.

Action model

• Actively involving young people in co-creating educational content, it transforms them from passive learners into motivated changemakers. 
• This hands-on collaboration with scientists ensures credibility and fosters trust in scientific knowledge, creating a strong persuasive effect for further engagement.
