Ciclaveiro

CSO: Ciclaveiro
Area: Urban mobility
Location: Aveiro

Type of project

The project extends its operations to the community in general through partnerships with local traders. Advertising materials placed in these establishments help to disseminate the project’s message to those who are not directly involved, further expanding the reach of the initiative and helping to integrate the most disconnected citizens.

It aims to respond to environmental and public health challenges in cities, given the increase in air pollution (due to the massive use of cars), road congestion and children’s sedentary lifestyle, promoting active and sustainable travel, on the home-school route, making them a fun and social moment on foot and by bike.

Target (Disengaged)

The target group are 1022 students from 4 schools, 4 parents’ associations are also involved; 32 health technicians,; 18 cultural, commercial and sporting establishments and 2 monitors at the gym on wheels. One of the main “disengaged” groups in the project are the children’s parents and other adults within the school community. The PéPedal Trains, while being carried out in public spaces, are meant to attract the attention and curiosity of other citizens.

Science – Based

The Medical Office, by holding information sessions in schools directly with children, facilitates the involvement of this group, with children taking the information they learn home. This format not only raises awareness among young people, but also indirectly educates parents about the positive impacts of sustainable mobility and the challenges of climate change. This creates a bridge between generations. Collaboration with health professionals operates on a voluntary basis, mainly involving finalists of the nursing course at the University of Aveiro and doctors on internship in health units in the region. This work with the community not only meets the curricular requirements of these professionals, but also strengthens the link between health and education.
A final video with some data about number of emissions, impact, km done, will be published.

Gender

The project ensures the inclusion of all children in an equitable way, promoting gender equality in all its activities. The project eliminates barriers to participation, encouraging girls to ride bicycles and join PéPedal Trains, traditionally seen as more masculine activities. Furthermore, Parents’ Associations actively involve mothers and fathers in coordinating activities, promoting equitable sharing of responsibilities in promoting sustainable mobility within families.

Action model

The project is well aligned with the mobility area of the call, as well as the rationale for the importance of promoting the use of bicycles instead of vehicles. The awareness-raising work is carried out with children up to 10 years of age and families, with the multiplier effect that children have on adults. It is consistent with what the organization’s experience has been.

  • R1 are Foot-Pedal trains that aim to increase the number of children/families who walk to school, with defined “train lines” on foot and by bike, and with an associated mobile app. There is a PéPedal School Pass, which rewards students for participation, introduces a playful and competitive element, attracting children and, consequently, raising awareness among their families.
  • R2 is a Pé-Pedal medical office that aims to increase families’ knowledge about active mobility in physical and mental health. Information transmitted by health technicians, with a scientific basis. There will be consultations to assess children’s health and provide advice on active mobility, but it is not clear where the consultations are held and how it will work. Sessions last a maximum of 30 minutes and are held in class, promoting a dynamic and interactive model that encourages direct involvement between health professionals, teachers and students. This format allows the message to be transmitted in a clear and engaging way, adapting it to the children’s age group. At the end of each session, each child is given a personalized medical prescription with instructions regarding the project. Foot-Pedal Trains (network of walking and cycling routes, designed with parents’ associations.
  • R3 is the Pé Pedal Friends network, which are local partners such as commerce, cultural projects, etc., which provide benefits to children with a pre-pedal pass.
