A project in the field of waste and circular economy focused on raising awareness through the self-construction of a community composter.
The project was created with the goal of raising awareness about the importance of waste separation and proper disposal—particularly of organic waste—through the self-construction and activation of the first community composter in Genoa.
The project will provide an opportunity to strengthen a local network that brings together the public and private sectors, characterized by shared goals such as promoting sustainable lifestyles, combating climate change, and environmental education.

The engagement of disengaged residents will be pursued through cultural engagement events and a discount on waste tax.

The project will involve non-traditional family units, which often cannot access bonuses or incentives but can benefit from the waste tax discount and join the community composter service. In particular, the project will promote the participation of single-person households and shared-living families.
Planned activities
- Installation and management of the community composter: Design, self-construction and launch of the first collective composter in the Ligurian capital, with the active participation of citizens.
- Environmental education courses: Workshops for children, families and schools on home composting, separate waste collection and natural waste cycles.
- Communication and awareness-raising activities: Creation of dissemination materials, toolkits and public initiatives to promote sustainable practices that can be replicated in urban contexts.
- Public-private network: Collaboration with the Environmental Education and Sustainability Centre of the Municipality of Genoa and with AMIU spa to consolidate a long-term alliance between institutions, the third sector and citizens.
Action model
- Residents have access to a self-built community composter, a service for properly disposing of their organic waste and experimenting with a community-based, science-driven circular economy practice.
